Finding Your Voice Through Healing Your Heart: The Practice and Art of Kirtan
We will learn and chant together in a judgement-free zone. No prior experience is necessary. The truth is, Kirtan does not have to be chanted well to be effective. Please don’t worry about singing beautifully or with perfect pitch. Sincerity, love, and devotion are all that matter in the practice of kirtan.
In our chanting session we will learn how to be process-oriented rather than product-oriented. It is only through not wanting results from our actions that we can truly let go and begin to go beyond ourselves – and into the sounds of the heart, the sounds within. Could there ever be a more beautifully poignant way to find our voice?
We will share in learning specific mantras and the purposes they can be used for. We will experience the chakras, (energy centers) and the colors of the aura through sound healing. Concentrating on and being present with the different energy centers of the body can help us to stay present, and to “be with” our experience and what comes up. Through gradually learning to become more and more present, we open the door to the inner-healer or inner-wisdom of the body and mind, the true self within. In our moments of deepest presence, of being in this moment, we can heal again, we can feel again, we can re-connect to our deepest essence and remember who we are.

Ganesh Om immersed himself in studying and teaching Yoga for 18 years. The practices of Kirtan, (devotional chanting) Pranic Healing, (Energy Healing) and Pranayama, (control of the breath) were the parts of Yoga he was the most drawn to and inspired by. Steeped in a classical tradition at the feet of a Guru, he eventually learned to listen to his own inner voice, to set healthy boundaries, and not to place the needs of others over ones’ own.
When leading Kirtan, his intention is to become one with the sound, and to sing from the heart while staying present and grounded. It is only through deep grounding that high voltage can travel and be channeled safely – and this can gradually be learned. In a safe environment of being connected and in the present moment, we can experience bliss and Divine ecstasy through the simple practice of Kirtan as the awakening of Divine Love.
As a Kirtan artist, Ganesh has performed and recorded with Krishna Das, most notably on his “All One” album, performing on his trumpet in Avatar Studios in New York, NY. Ganesh has led kirtan for many years in Yoga schools and Ashrams during group sessions for teacher trainings, and workshops. He brings this consciousness of love, devotion, and service to others into his financial planning practice at Northwestern Mutual’s Durham office, where he is a financial professional and an advocate.
